Communication in virtual team

A virtual team is formed by a group of people who work independently but with the same purpose or same leadership. Their members usually have limitations of space, time, and must rely heavily on technology to communication with each other. As with many team structures, there are some advantages and disadvantages with virtual teams. One advantage is you might be able to work with people in remote without constrains of a set schedule. Another benefit is that people from different cultures can share experiences to better reach professional goals. A disadvantage is that some people find it challenging to develop working relationships with communications that are not face to face and are dependent on technology.

Communication is a key for success in virtual teams. An atmosphere of open and honest communication must exist among team members. Dialogue needs to be precise and concrete but at the same time polite as there is no face to face interaction to aid with understanding the intentions of members or leader. As a whole the team must be aware that patience and good attitude toward all member’s area a must order to alleviate the challenge of remote discussions. Organizational functioning is dependent upon the communicative relationships among individuals within that organization because these relationships facilitate the dissemination of critical information and expertise that enables high performance. (Brass, 2004). There are some factors that will help the communication in virtual teams: leadership, trust among its members and technology.

Leadership is an important factor because it helps to increase effective communication between team members. Leaders in virtual teams must be extremely clear with goals and directions and promote organizational commitment. (Dennis, Meola, Hall, 2013).
