Case Study: Process Analysis at Arnold Palmer Hospital

1. As Diane's new assistant, you need to flowchart this process. Explain how the process might be improved once you have completed the chart.

I can improve the process by looking at the steps where the most of the patients are having trouble with or where they’re taking too much time. Like for example, the steps where pregnant women have to go to different floors, I think the process would be improved if the step in pre-registrating the patient would be done automatically and ahead of time and upon the time the patient is entering the Labor & Delivery check-in desk, they should already check if it is time for the pregnant woman to make delivery.

2. If a mother is scheduled for a Caesarian-section birth (i.e. the baby is removed from the womb surgically), how would this flowchart change?

The mother will not be doing the first 3 steps, instead she will go directly to the L&D Triage at the 8th floor. Because she is already scheduled and she knows when the time she’ll be giving birth.

3. If all mothers were electronically (or manually) preregistered, how would the flowchart change? Redraw the chart to show your changes.

The process will be shortened and easier because the patient won’t be doing the pre-registering steps. So, the patient will go directly to the 8th floor.

4. Describe in detail a process that the hospital could analyze, beside the ones mentioned in this case.

A process that should be analyzed is the medication delivery from the pharmacy to the patient. The hospital should see to it that every patient is intaking their medicine on time and that right medications are delivered properly and ahead of time. Medicine is very important in every patient.
