Chapter 1 / Communication // Self-Talk
2 Self-Perspective Self-Picture
make choices
Exercise: Remessaging
In this exercise, you are rewriting your self-talk, trading in the disempowering messages of the critic for the more
empowering messages of your coach. In this way, you are introducing and slowly integrating a new truth for
yourself. For each type of language covered in this section, you’ll find one example of a negative self-message
that has already been remessaged. After reading over the example, work together as a class or in small groups
to come up with and remessage another typical example of the critic’s language. Then do the third one on your
own.
Language of Inferiority
Language of Self-Esteem
Critic (disempowering self-message)
Coach (empowering remessage)
Reassure: It’s okay that I make mistakes sometimes.
Example: Why can’t I do anything right!?
Reconstruct: I’m going to pay closer attention to
what I’m doing so I don’t make that mistake again.
Reassure:
As a Class:

Reconstruct:
I'm going to wake up earlier so I'm not late again
Language of Guilt
Language of Forgiveness
Critic (disempowering self-message)
Coach (empowering remessage)
Reassure: I know now how I want to handle things
in the future.
Example: It’s my fault that everything
got messed up.
Reconstruct: I’m going to do everything I can to set
things right now.
Reassure:
As a Class:
Reconstruct:
I will make it up somehow in the future
Reassure:
I blame myself for lack of money
Reconstruct:
I'm going to find a second job so my ends meet.
