Unions Are Needed Today More Than Ever Pro Side

Introduction

The union is an officially recognized association of employees practicing a similar trade or employed in the same company or industry who have joined together to present a united front and collective voice in dealing with management (Dessler & Cole, 2011). Recently, people are having a discussion about whether unions are needed today; different people hold different opinions. In this debate, our opinion is unions are needed today more than ever. Some unions that are present in BC are the Canadian Union of Public Employees, BC Teachers Federation, and International Association of Firefighters to name a few, there are many more.

Why unions are needed today more than ever?

Unions can grant life security for union members

According to the website UFCW, union members in Canada enjoy pensions, dental and vision care coverage, sick pay, disability insurance, and many other best health and welfare benefits. Moreover, their necessary time off work, rights to start a family or take vacation can be guaranteed by their collective agreement (Benefits of Union Membership, n.d). The advantage of the benefits of a union goes farther when you compare the percentages to union and non-union. 70% of union workers are covered by dental care versus 44% of non-union workers, 53% of union workers are covered by vision care versus 24%, and 90% of union members have prescription drug coverage where only 68% on non-union members have it (The Union Advantage).

Unions can improve members’ happiness and life satisfaction by improving their living environment. As a result, members will be aroused by the enthusiasm to participate in the development of the company, and the members’ stability will be maintained. Nowadays, people feel there is a high working pressure around them, so they need unions to bring them happiness and humanistic care.
