Vegitarian or Not

Me… Vegetarian? No.

Vegetarianism is such a complex concept. Not only is it a new way of living, but it is a process that often breaks traditions and values. Vegetarians give out information that aims to discourage people from eating meat, and although some of the information they produce is true, most people who are not vegetarians argue they will not change simply because they like meat. Vegetarians and meat-eaters both have reasons for their choices, however, it is the individual’s decision if they want to practice vegetarianism. Like many others, I have decided that I will continue to consume meat.

The most prominent argument from vegetarians is that the animals are mistreated in factory farms right before they are gruesomely killed, and then distributed to the public as a product that delivers happiness. The main animal mentioned in conversation about animal cruelty in factory farms is the chicken. Being one of the most frequently eaten meats in the world—we fry it, bake it, grill it, and much more—farmers could not produce enough chicken to satisfy the needs of the meat-consuming public, so the factory farms began operations that some would call cruel. The Humane Society presents information that each chicken is placed into a cage barely bigger than the bird itself, thus not allowing the bird to turn, walk, or even spread its wings. I do believe there is irony in the production or as vegetarians may refer to it, destruction, of meat, yet, I continue to consume it. Vegetarians do not realize that they kill animals indirectly. Animals that rely on certain vegetables are competing with vegetarians to survive. Because these animals do not have the resources to get the vegetables like vegetarians, they are forced to go without food. Animals cannot survive without food and while vegetarians argue that farm animals suffer wrongful deaths, the same logic applies to the animals that are starved to death from lack of food.
