Situation Report
Canada’s livestock industry is at a crossroads with Alberta at the center. The BSE
crisis and food safety issues created the need to think and respond differently
to production and marketing efforts. With a commitment to real change that
invites re-invention, the future for the Alberta livestock and meat industry
promises to be bright. This document describes how the alignment of partners
and a new plan of attack will enable us to take advantage of the tremendous
opportunities that lie ahead.
The Alberta Livestock and Meat Strategy (ALMS) was announced in June 2008.
Since then an extensive consultation has been undertaken to solicit feedback
and develop further insights into improving strategies for the transformation
of the livestock and meat industry in Alberta. Four key groups have been
collaborating to define a roadmap that will allow the livestock and meat
industry to achieve a future that is prosperous and beneficial for all.
These partners of the plan are:
(producers, feeders, processors);
1. Alberta livestock and meat industry
2. Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency Ltd. (ALMA);
3. Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD); and
4. Agricultural Finance Services Corporation (AFSC).
Each stakeholder is key to a healthy livestock and meat industry. We must
work in harmony to build the vision and provide a blueprint for strategically
rebuilding the industry, recapturing lost markets and establishing the foundation
