The Super Bowl: It’s More Than a Game

After 20 weeks spent watching 32 football teams compete against each other in The National Football League (NFL), the two best teams emerge from their conferences. These two teams will play against each other to determine the ultimate winner and gain possession of the Vince Lombardi Trophy; this trophy symbolizes the pinnacle of success in the NFL. The Super Bowl is where the two teams will meet up to finish the season and a champion will be crowned. Over the years, the Super Bowl has become more than just a game; it is an event. The Super Bowl is the most successful television event every year: drawing in millions of viewers, generating billions of dollars in advertising, and producing halftime shows worthy of concert events.

Every year, the Super Bowl attracts more and more viewers. In 2015, “Over 114 million viewers tuned into Super Bowl XLIX…making it the most watched television show in U.S. history” (Breech, 2015, para. 2). The producers of the Super Bowl have done an incredible job at creating this event, which has almost become a national holiday in America. Breech continues to say, “There have only been seven shows in American television that have topped 100 million viewers-and six of those are Super Bowls” (2015, para. 4). That leaves only one show in America’s television history that has nothing to do with the game of football. In comparison, the 2015 State of the Union address had “31.7 million people tuned into the various networks that hosted the annual telecast” (Rhodan, 2015, para. 2). The Super Bowl is televised on one network and drew in over 82.3 million viewers more than our president could on numerous networks. Even people who do not normally watch football, tune into the Super Bowl for the commercials and halftime show.
