The Reality of Low Cost Clothing

Americans hunger for fast fashion has led to large corporations providing clothing at low cost at any cost. With the globalization of the garment industry, outsourcing production to third-world countries has become very profitable for their bottom line: providing the customer with a five dollar shirt and a ten dollar pair of jeans. One thing consumers fail to realize, is at who expense or what expense this is accomplished. The effects of fast fashion have led to capitalism of the garment industry, overconsumption of clothing, environmental pollution and the disregard of human rights.

With much to gain, Major Label Companies are taking advantage of captialism in third world countries. By outsourcing the work they are not accountable on the process of production. According to Steve Clayton’s article: “These garment capitalists employed 3,122 workers. The

lives of the garment workers are a cheap commodity for the garment capitalists as their

labour power is purchased cheaply. The garment workers are paid $38.50 (£24) per

month. According to the International Trade Union Confederation, a Vienna-based labour

rights group, garment workers in Bangladesh are among the lowest-paid in the world” These companies continue to exploit workers by not paying them a fair wage. Another company that’s be able to monopolize the industry is MONSANTOS they have patented this genetically modified organism (GMO) for cotton seeds. by allowing farmers to purchased seeds and chemical on a loan. If the crops don't produce, farmers are unable to pay the debt. Resulting in Monsanto taking over their farms as collateral. These Big companies are making sure there is enough supply of cotton save in production the focus turns on marketing this product to ultimately have consumer feel like they are saving and purchase more
