The Deficiencies of a Missile Defense System

Missiles and missile defenses were an unknown concept before World War II. During this war, various nations sought to develop self-propelled munitions that could strike ranged targets, thus, the missile concept was born. Unfortunately Hitler’s regime was the first that researched and developed this weapon of terror in the form of the V-1 rockets, designing these weapons to cause death and destruction from a far, and more importantly, to invoke fear. Because of these new threats, many countries began desperately researching ways to protect themselves, from the re-configuration of basic anti-aircraft cannons to anti-missile weapons. Our most recent search for defense has taken us in many different directions; unfortunately none of these directions will be of any good use to us. Constructions of a Ballistic Missile Defense shield will not protect the nation from nuclear strikes, it will however, create a greater number of hostilities among our country and others which will lead to the creation of even more dangerous weapons.

Upon the conclusion of World War II, the two superpowers of the world began what came to be known as the “cold war.” During these years, the United States of America and the Soviet Union strived to counter each other’s weapons and accomplishments. Nuclear technology grew as a priority for both nations and mass production of nuclear weapons took place. Inter-continental ballistic missiles or ICBM’s developed to lift off from a launch pad into orbit around earth and then strike a target anywhere on the globe with a nuclear payload far more devastating than the Hiroshima blast of 1945. This possibility was the catalyst to developing a missile defense shield. The Reagan presidency first attempted to develop a “star wars” program or Strategic Defense Initiative, basically another name for missile defense.
