Expected the unexpected is my personal tagline for New York City’s northern borough
most commonly known as Harlem. Since the 1920’s, Harlem has been known as the major
neighborhood for African-American residential and cultural melting pot. After visiting the
borough for just a few hours it is extremely clear to see that the history of Harlem still stands
today and has had a lasting impact on the ever changing culture. Harlem consists of distinct
history that can’t be found anywhere else on the island of Manhattan. The legacy of Harlem’s
past is still evident today, especially within the boroughs most populated streets.
125th Street is the gateway and crossroads of Harlem at any given time of the day.
Standing there for a few minutes and experiencing the life happening all around is a sensation in
itself. In one corner you’ll see street vendors selling incense that smells of herbs, spices, and
everything in between, yet across the street you’ll find a crammed line of patrons stretching the
length of entire block waiting to board the bus. The experience doesn’t stop there, just a few
steps from 125th street you'll find the Apollo Theater. The 80-year-old concert hall that has
introduced and been home to some of American cultures most famous performers including the
Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, and Stevie Wonder. In 1983, the Apollo received
official state of city landmark status and still remains and important part of Harlem’s unique
history today.
Only a short walk away you’ll find the Theresa Hotel, a mid-20th century 13-story hotel
adorned with with a white brick facade, lace detailing, and iron balconies that show a high level
of craftsmanship. In it’s time the hotel was commonly referred to as “The Waldorf of Harlem”
and was even called one of the most visually striking structures in northern Manhattan. Since its
