Lab 3

Separation of a Mixture of Solids

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to find out how to separate four pure substances and how solubility and magnetism is being applied. In addition, during the experiment, the percent composition needs to be calculated within each substance.

Procedure: In this lab, there items and materials from the labpaq that are required for this experiment. Items such as 1. Bowl, Crushed ice, Distilled water, Lighter or matches, Oven mitt or kitchen towel, Plastic wrap, Roll of paper towels, Ruler, Scissors, 2 Sheets of paper, and Source of tap water. From the labpaq, the items needed are Beaker, 100 mL, glass, Burner fuel, Burner stand, Cup, plastic, clear, 3oz, Cylinder, 25 mL, Digital scale, Funnel, Magnet bar, Pair of gloves, Safety goggles, and Stirring rod.

To begin with, the first things needed are the weighing boat and the mixture of solids. On the scale, the boat has to be placed first that reads zero. Soon after, it needs to be weighed. After, a magnet and a small plastic is needed to take the iron fillings from the mixture. A small piece of paper is needed to and has to be weighed. When the iron filings have been taken out, the small paper along with the filings has to be weighed. To find the mass of the iron filings, the mass of the paper with the filings is subtracted to the mass of the paper.

Another experiment is obtaining a 100 ml beaker and has to be weighed. The remaining mixture of solids has to be put inside the beaker. 50 ml of distilled water is needed and be combined along with the mixture of solids. After that, stirring the water and mixture is required. To begin with the heating process, a burner stand and burner fuel has to be placed on a pie plate. After, light the fuel and slide it under the stand.

Following that, the beaker with the mixture of solids and distilled water has to be place on the stand to begin the heating/boiling process. Stirring is necessary...
