Christopher George Latore Wallace, better known by his stage names The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie or Biggie Smalls, was an influential rapper who was shot and killed in a drive by shooting on March 9, 1997. This paper will discuss the witnesses for both prosecution and defense, and provide a description of the trial process. Examples of the opening and closing statements, and the types of questions asked during direct examination will be reviewed as well as highlights of important points for cross-examination. At completion a better understanding of the entire trial process will be clear.

Wallace had just left a music industry party. He was on the way to his hotel when a dark colored Chevy Impala pulled up next to his SUV at a stop light. Someone yelled out the window to him, he lowered his window and four shots were fired into his chest. He died later at a nearby hospital.

Eyewitnesses described the lone gunman as a fair skinned African American wearing a suit and bow tie. Police investigated a former LAPD police officer David Mack. Mack grew up in Compton, the same neighborhood as Marion “Surge” Knight who was the CEO of the record company Biggie worked for, Death Row Records. Investigators believed Knight hired a hitman to kill Biggie. Police documents indicate that an eyewitness placed Mack at the scene of the shooting by someone who was riding in the same motorcade as Biggie, and Mack drove a car similar to the dark-colored Chevrolet Impala that was seen driving away from the shooting. They also investigated another friend of Knights named Amir Muhammad. Mahammad matched the eyewitness description. However, investigators were unable to present any hard evidence linking any of the men to the crime and the case went...
