A Clockwork America

Throughout history, man has had an interesting fascination with the keeping of time. Many different inventions, such as the sundial, calendars, charts, and especially clocks have been created for this sole purpose. The clock was a special invention, comprised of many intricate parts that run together in harmony to help keep time, and ultimately, to keep everyone organized. People who are interested in the inner workings of the clock may realize they complexity and beauty of how it all works. I believe, however, that as we come to understand how the clock works, we will gain a greater appreciation for other subjects, such as this great country. America is like this clock I speak of because the delicate inner workings represent different functions that help America to run.

The clock is an intricate machine that is expected to run at close to perfection year in and year out. It is full of gears and cogs that are placed together, teeth interlocked. Each gear in the clock is essential for the clock to work, and if one cog stops working, the whole clock could shut down. These essential gears represent careers and lifestyles that people live and do to help America to run strong. An example could be people in the health profession. If all of the sudden, those people were to stop working, the whole nation could be thrust into chaos. People would have no way to recover properly from injuries and the nation’s mortality rate would potentially skyrocket. It would be a very horrifying time to live in if that “gear” shut down.

Another example could be law enforcers. If these people suddenly decided to stop working, Americans would have reason to fear for their lives. Crime would run rampant through the nation and there would be no consequences for the criminals’ actions. Businesses would shut down because merchandise would be stolen and they’d lose all of their revenue. All these examples shows how much we...
