Storytelling Speech

The Storytelling speech is a 3-5 minute speech that tells a story. It is worth 50 points, or 5% of your grade. The reason I use this speech first is because humans are storytellers by nature. If you get into a car accident or something exciting happens, you will probably repeat the story several times to family and/or friends.

Requirements:

* You must write the story. Please do not copy a story online, in a book, or from a movie.

* You will not be turning in a copy to me so you do not have to type it. I do suggest writing it on paper, that way you can practice.

* It can be a true story from a personal experience or it can be fictitious.

* If you go under 3 minutes, you will lose one point per 30 second increment. If you go above 5 minutes, no points will be lost but your story should not be more than 7 minutes.

* Your story should have a teaser or opening with impact for the first sentence or two, then you would start at the beginning.

* Example: “I stood in the hallway of my apartment with a broom in one hand and a trashcan lid in the other. Cyndee crept towards the bathroom door, covered from head to toe in clothing, only her eyes visible. We braced ourselves as she turned the doorknob, to let the creature out that was trapped inside. But let me go back to the beginning. It all started…”

Grading:

* Does your story have an impactful beginning or teaser?

* Is your story organized and interesting?

* Do you have a satisfying ending?

* Do you sound like you’ve practiced, or are you fumbling around and losing your place?

* Are you monotone, or do you have excitement or changing in pitch, volume, rate, etc?

* Do you have hand gestures that go with the story?

* Do you say “um” and “uh” a lot?

* Do you tap your fingers on the podium or play with your note cards?

* Is your speech 3-5 minutes?
