Classroom Management - Three Practices

There were so many useful tips that it was difficult to narrow it down to just three. However, I think that the four that connected with me most were: 1) from the Caring and Control Create a Safe, Positive Classroom video where Ms. Sinclair started each day by asking the children to rate how they were feeling, 1-5. I believe that it is very important, especially with small children to understand how their personal experiences and feelings can affect their day. If the teacher, as well as the other students are aware that a child may be upset or tired, it can help the child overcome what he or she is feeling in order to have a productive and successful day. It can also let other children who may be afraid to express their feelings know that they are not alone. 2) from the Secret Word video, I liked the concept of using a specific word in order to refocus the students. Ms. Ramos was wise in allowing the children to choose the word. It gives them a sense of empowerment in that they had a say in which word would be used. It shows that she respects them and values their input. It also shows them that they are involved in the overall management of the classroom. 3) from the Choreograph Your Classroom video, Ms. Saul used movement as a way of energizing her students. This ties in with the “A Sobering Lessoned Learned” article that emphasizes how long students are expected to sit during the day. The author was on point when she wrote about how exhausting sitting all day can be, especially for children. I also like the way that Ms. Saul choreographed the way that students would go to the mat and return to their desks. It is just the type of routine and organization that serves as the perfect discipline for children. 4) from the “A Sobering Lesson Learned” article.
