Am I Ready
Am I a good fit for this position? Did I make the right career choice? What will I do if I don’t like this? Are the students going to like me? These are a few questions that might keep a first year physical education teacher awake the night before her first day of school. Someone once said “You have to love what you do, and if you don’t than don’t do it!” As a mentor to these children, who you will see more than their own parents, you are there to have an impact on their lives (Benji Hughes, Crestline). These children want to have someone who believes they can do whatever their little heart’s desire. Why don’t you be that special person who lights up a little ones face by you just walking in door?
As an adult, we occasionally remanence on being back in elementary, especially kindergarten. No work, no bills, no duties, just a one in a life chance opportunity to be a kid. A kindergartener wouldn’t realize that they are about to embark on a journey that they themselves will have to make. We think pre- k and kindergarten are blow- off grade levels but do parents realize kindergarten is where the curriculum for physical education begins. We will soon realize the primary focus is on the development of fundamental motor skills and an understanding of movement concepts. Students in kindergarten tend to be slower, have a steady growth rate, have limited muscular strength and endurance, short attention spans, and the need for practice in interacting with other in an higher grade level (Alabama Course of Study: Physical Education). Kindergarteners should begin to learn good behavior tactic for physical activity setting and be given the chance to experience the joy and value of shared play. Studies have shown that encouraging a regular physical activity not only provides exercise but also allows students to understand good healthy behaviors and physical well-being.
