Abstract

This research forms a basis for a proposal to the government of Saudi Arabia to implement a new public transportation in Jeddah. The focus of the research will be within the city limits. Public transportation is needed in Jeddah in order to free up the congestion in the transportation system; lower the cost of transportation and to make the city less polluted and sustainable. The transportation system should include public buses and a subway system. It is important for the citizens and visitors who frequent the city. The problems in Jeddah are that it is a large, sprawling, and disorganized, city that takes a while to learn and maneuver with complex patterns. Taxis and private cars are the only present transportation system. Citizens tend not to use taxis because it is not professional and not comfortable. However, in Jeddah, Foreigners generally use taxi services. People who don’t have a private car and drivers face transportation issues, especially when going to their daily work or appointments. Private cars are also not affordable; for example, a half/ hour ride would be 60 to 80 SR, unlike buses or subways, which in general cost a fraction of that cost.

At present, some new transportation services are available but not affordable to everyone. Phone applications like Uber and Careem are some services that can be downloaded but passengers can only pay by Visa or Mastercard. Not everyone has these cards available to him or her.
