How Education Has Changed

The days of going to school and carrying books and sitting in class have gained a little bit of competition in the past decade from for-profit colleges and universities. But because of the reputation that the for-profit sector of schools is earning it’s really not much of a competition though. Students who attend for profit schools go there for years and at the end, have no job and are in a lot more debt than if they would have attended at regionally accredited university. Some students find out they don’t have the education they need to be able to take the licensing exams they need to take after college. According to The Week magazine “ Schools have been accused of misleading applicants about loan costs, exaggerating potential post-graduation salaries, and targeting disabled veterans and homeless people to boost enrollment.”(2011) Students should be concerned about the higher debt levels, the likelihood of employment, what the priorities of the school are and whether or not the school is regionally accredited before they think of attending a for-profit college.

When colleges are more worried about marketing instead of a quality education then parents and students should worry if this college is a good choice. Being a student myself, I would wonder why an institution would put more money into marketing than into educating the students. Part of marketing should be the product that the school produces, which is an educated student ready for the field that they went to school for. Their reputation for being a quality school for students should be some of what they strive for. If I attend a school, I want to know that the tuition is the rate that it is because of the quality education I’m receiving not because of the cost of advertising, and that they are being totally transparent with me.
