Successful Parenting and its Effect on Child Development

According to Fosco & Grych (2008) cognitive, emotional and family system methods have previously been recognized as mediators of the relationship between inter-parental struggle and children’s modification. In simpler terms, the way in which the family dynamics are within a household has an effect on the child’s development. There are many different views on how to not only discipline a child but how to raise the child in general. Those factors depend greatly on the way the parents were raised, what the parents have going on in their personal lives, and other things like culture play a huge factor as well. An in depth discussion on family systems and child development is to follow.

From a functionalist perspective, a family is a system with several parts that makes it run successfully. With any type of system, when a fuse is not working properly it may affect the entire mechanism, it is the same with a family. Victor Hinson (2014) defines the family system as a “dynamic equilibrium” where everyone in the family knows and understands their roles and are able to keep it balanced. If there are complications within the family, where maybe one member of the family are causing issues regardless if it is a parent or child the dynamics of the family will indeed suffer from that. The family system also has a huge impact on the child’s healthy development. Depending on the style of parenting used within the household, it will either benefit the child socially, emotionally, spiritually, and physically or do extreme damage. There are four known parenting styles that Dr. Jeanne Brooks (2014) discusses her in lecture that counselors should be aware of in this field.
