In 1985, I found myself very interested in becoming a firefighter. It sounded like a lot of fun to be around fire trucks, and fighting fires. Little did I know that not only was it an incredibly hard career move, it was also a very addictive way of life. It seemed like the more I got involved, and learned about firefighting techniques and issues that I could face, the more I wanted to become a great firefighter. I had joined the local fire department as a volunteer, and had to participate in the mandatory department training, learning about the different trucks, how to operate them and how to properly put out fires of various sorts. My biggest problem was that was not enough to satisfy my hunger for knowledge to learn to control and conquer the savage workings of a fire. Fire was a very scary thing for me to face at first. As I gained more wisdom, I also gained more courage. Fire was also fascinating to me. It absolutely amazed me sometimes at how easily fire could be brought under control, with not only very little effort, but also very little water. I also was witness to just how devastating a fire could be and how quickly it can get out of hand and take lives in the blink of an eye. I wanted to be a very well informed fire-fighter and it was my nature to become one of the best firefighters this department had ever seen. I always gave my all when I set my sights on doing things in my life that meant something to me.
I signed up for courses in firefighting that were funded by the State of Michigan, and had standards that were set up by the International Association of Firefighters. I dove into school with both feet and seemed consumed by the desire to gain all of the knowledge that I could from my various instructors. Firefighting I was a school that would last six months and would add up to more than 150 hours of federal training. Firefighting II was next and it expounded on more of the sciences...
