I. INTRODUCTION

A. Attention Getter: Jaws is a film that was produced in 1975 by Steven Spielberg that was seen across the world. The film created a culture that now classifies sharks as killers. Specifically the shark in the blockbuster film at Amity Island was portrayed as a man eating killer. The film convinced much of the public to view sharks as a threat to humans, and classified them as dangerous, and high-risk predators.

B. Mission Statement: Today, I’d like to incline to the damage done by shark hunting, because according to ezproxy.canyons.edu, August 6, 1988, Wendy J. Williams states, “Besides shark hunting for sport, the culprits are over-fishing, cuisine is used for shark fin soup, and alternative medicine.”

C. Preview: First, I’ll explain the shark hunting dilemma, second, I’ll tell you about the motives that lead to shark’s being hunted, and third, I’ll offer resolutions to these motives.

II. BODY

A. First Main Point Topic Sentence (Problem): I’ll now explain the shark hunting dilemma including the types of hunting, the damage caused by shark hunting, and what is affected by it.

1. Claim: Thousands of sharks are killed each year because of shark hunting.

a. Support: At the Human Society of the United States, May 11th, 2011 confirms that, “Up to 73 million sharks are killed world-wide each year in commercial fisheries, mostly for their fins.”

b. Impact: With such a large number of shark’s being killed, it is affecting the food chain.

2. Claim: The damage caused by shark hunting is made very evident.

a. Support: At thejakartapost.com, December 28, 2011, Desy Nurhayati states that, “Many shark species are endangered, and this excessive degree of hunting could threaten their population, as most of the sharks that are caught are adult females." 

b. Impact: Endangered sharks will soon be extinct from excessive hunting.

3. Claim: Sharks regulate the ocean’s ecosystem.
