1. In what ways does the Taj meet the criteria for a “sustainable” organization?

In many different ways it does meet the criteria for a sustainable organization because, during the terriost attack the employees didn’t escape. The employees stayed and tried to help the guest as best as they could. They helped them get to safety locations in the hotel such as the basements, and the kitchens. A manager offered the guest water, and also kept checking on how they were doing. He took his own time to get the guest to stay quiet and to keep them calm during this horrible event. These nice caring employees helped over a thousand guest get away, even though they knew that they could of gotten killed. There were employees that did get killed for helping the guest. There was a headwaiter got killed, he was directing workers to serve as human shields for guests being evacuated. There were even telephone operators that were once evacuated, and then went back in to call the guest and offer whatever help, and information they could to the guest.

2. What would you describe as the Taj’s basic strategy as a hotel? How do human resource practices support that strategy?

Their basic strategy as a hotel was incredible. They all wanted to help the guests even though they did not have to and could of escaped. In India their approach to recruitment is a departure from the normal. Human resources practices support the strategy because when they interviewed they concluded that the companies recruiting, their training, and rewards practices is what made the employees do their best that they could to do for the guest. This was because the human resource policies reinforced their policies of the employees to act and behave calmly and effectively in these situations.

3. The head researcher who studied Taj has said this case shows that HR practices can ensure that employees will behave ethically. Do you agree? Why or why...
