They’re getting laid while everyone else is getting laid off seems to be the theme of Stealing Africa, a documentary film directed by Christoffer Gulbrandsen. Multinational corporations have quite the reputation in mainstream society just the word corporation alone has a pessimistic tone to it. Glencore is a multinational commodity trading and mining company that has experienced its fair share of dilemmas ranging from tax evasion cases to claims of unfair practices while gaining profit from another countries natural resource. I believe Mr. Gulbrandsen made this film to not just bring awareness to this ever growing issue but because he genuinely cares about the exploitations occurring in countries like Zambia. It has to be demoralizing to a country when its economic backbone brings no wealth to assist the people except assisting those multinational corporations who swop in like scavengers. Imagine if Houston could not profit from the oil and gas industry? The city would certainly not be in the great condition that it is currently in. Normally we walk past the aging activist on the street who talks about unfair government practices and you think for a minute, maybe even a second that none of what the activist is saying can be true but I guess like anything in this world, you just have to wait until it happens to you.

Christoffer Gulbrandsen’s sole purpose of this documentary was to answer his argument of why it is that Zambia is rich in its natural resource of copper, yet the country is so poor to the point where healthcare and public education are not financially possible. Ruschlikon is a lovey, wealthy community in Switzerland where the town motto is “of course you can be rich, but please don’t show it” and that whole attitude of “nothing can ever go wrong here” is ever so present.
