Knowledge and Skills: By the end of this unit 1, it is expected that:

1. I can recognize that processing a crime scene involves purposeful documentation of the conditions at the scene and the collection of any physical evidence. 

2. I can describe how evidence at a crime scene, such as hair, fingerprints, shoeprints and *blood (*I can recognize that bloodstain patterns left at a crime scene can help investigators establish the events that took place during the crime and can graph and analyze experimental data to determine the height associated with bloodstain patterns and angles of impact) can help forensic investigators determine what might have occurred and help identify or exonerate potential suspects and analyze key information gathered at a simulated crime scene.

3. I can identify the differing types of blood types and their Rh (+/-) factors and use specific hematology vocabulary to describe this process at a molecular level.

4. I can design a controlled experiment and recognize that all external variables in an experiment need to be controlled. 

5. I can describe the relationship between DNA, genes, and chromosomes and can describe the structure of DNA and the structure of its nucleotides. 

6. 6a. I can explain how restriction enzymes work to specifically cut DNA and describe how gel electrophoresis separates those DNA fragments and recognize that gel electrophoresis can be used to examine DNA differences between individuals.

6b. I can demonstrate the steps of gel electrophoresis and analyze the resulting restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) for a crime scene investigation as well as genetic screenings for potential diseases.

7. I can describe how an autopsy is performed and the types of information it provides to officials regarding the manner and cause of death.  Furthermore, I can interpret and predict information from an autopsy report to predict the manner of death.
