Leo Tolstoy is one of the greatest writers the world has ever seen. He has written brilliant pieces of literature that have stood the test of time. In 1877 he published one of his greatest pieces of work known as Anna Karenina. Through Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy brings up topics that are very important in the Russian society such as family, love, social position, marriage, and love. “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” That is the first sentence in the book and it is believed that family is the biggest issue that Tolstoy brings up.
Anna Karenina is a woman that has grown unhappy with her marriage to Alexei Karenin but does not realize it until she travels to Moscow to visit her brother, where she meets Alexei Vronsky. Vronsky follows her back to St. Petersburg where later on they start an affair. Alexei Karenin has his suspicions about the affair because of the way people talk to him and look at Anna. He confronts Anna about his suspicions but she denies having an affair. He confronts her again when he sees Anna’s interest in Vronsky and she admits that they are having an affair and that she is in love with Vronsky. During that time, marriage was a very big issue and divorce was views as a disgrace, not just to the couple but also to the entire family. This is why Alexei Karenin denies Anna’s request for a divorce so that she can be with Vronsky. He demands that they keep up outward appearances by staying together. A divorce would cause Anna much disgrace and public shame. Anna becomes pregnant with Vronky’s child and Karenin agrees to grant Anna the divorce after seeing how unhappy she is but Anna agrees not to go through with it. Anna leaves and moves to the country with Vronsky but later get upset with him because of his social life while she must remain at home. She begins to think that Vronsky no longer love her anymore and picks quarrels with Vronsky. She becomes angry with him and begins to lose hope and becomes...
