A short story is a brief work of literature, usually written in narrative prose.

Elements in short story:

• PLOT

• SETTING

• CHARACTER

• CONFLICT

• THEME

PLOT is a literary term used to describe the events

that make up a story or the main part of a story.

Consist in 5 parts.

1. exposition or the introduction The beginning of the story where the characters and the setting is revealed.

2. rising action

➢ This is where the events in the story become complicated and the conflict in the story is revealed (events between the introduction and climax).

3. Climax

➢ The highest point of interest in the story when the character(s) solves his/her struggles

4. falling action

➢ The character completes the action of his/her decision

5. Resolution

➢ The final workings of a story’s conflict

➢ All of the loose ends are tied up (usually)

SETTING

The time (time of day, season, present, past, future) and the location (country, planet, town, buildings, PLUS a description of the surroundings) where the action occurs.

CHARACTER

A character is a person depicted in a narrative or drama.

A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story or other literary work.

■ Protagonist- Usually the “good guy” or hero in the story.

■ Anatogist -The “bad guy” or villain in the story

CONFLICT

It is what prevents the main character from getting what he or she wants

The plot is driven by climax and it is the most important feature of the story

There are two types of conflicts: Internal and External.

Internal conflict is the struggle occurring within a character's mind.

External struggle between a literary or dramatic character and an outside forcesuch as nature or another character, which drives the dramatic actionof the plot.

THEME

The theme of a short story ought to always be important to the writer who can use it to express an opinion, share views on values, interests, topics, ideas...
