Zora Neale Hurston was born January 7th, 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama. She was an American novelist who wrote four novels and published more then 50 short stories, plays, and essays. She is best know for her work on the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. She was the fifth child out of eight of John Hurston and Lucy Ann Hurston.
What was the town that you lived in like?
Zora Hurston: Well I lived in a all African American town called Eatonville, Florida. The place I stayed was far from a ghetto, in fact it was the first all black community to be incorporated. While we did have a nice little town I didn't have much education and my family wasn't that rich either.
What was something significant your mother told you that stuck with you?
My mother died when I was at the age of nine. She always encouraged me to be myself, to be creative, and above all be independent. I miss her all the time, she had such encouraging words.
Can you tell us about your father?
My father was a proud man. He didn't quiet like me. He resented that I was born a girl and took my sister Sarah and favored her over me. After my mother died he married again and rejected me. I stayed with my relatives a lot, I was shuffled around a lot of the time.
How many times have you've been married?
I have been married twice. Herbert Sheen, who was a jazz musician, which ended in 1931. I also was married to Albert Price who was 25 years younger then I was, this marriage only lasted seven months.
Did you enjoy your many travels?
I did. I loved to travel to places that were unknown to me. I loved to dive into different cultures and begin to write about them. Haiti and Jamaica where very interesting places.
Why are Jamaica and Haiti so interesting?
Well in 1937 I traveled to Jamaica and Haiti to study their such culture. I was among their spiritual gathering and many Voodoo rituals. It was a journey seeing so many people do something that I never knew could happen. I recored...
