Importance of the Army Value: Duty

So, are you thinking about just sleeping in tomorrow, say maybe just an hour? So first let’s just assess the situation for a moment. Your alarm clock has once again woken you out of your relaxing and much needed beauty sleep, right? Now you are a bit cranky and say “screw it, I’m gonna sleep an extra hour,” even though you need to report to you duty within the hour. Meanwhile back at your place of duty a mission has been appointed to your squad specifically and not a soul more. They need the full squad which consists of eight, including you. The superior says u got one hour to complete the task. Now, remember, you are catching some more of that beauty sleep while your squad has been tasked out on an important mission. Therefore, you have now compromised that mission and have created a problem between your fellow soldiers and NCOs alike. They now have to cover down in your absence, which has pushed more work unto your fellow peers. This causes the task to take longer than the deadline of an hour which has ultimately compromised this very important mission and potentially kill or save lives, but you weren’t there to know. So, still thinking about sleeping in an extra hour! How about reporting to your respected place of duty on time?

In this essay I will be using definitions from Concise Oxford English Dictionary and some of the Army Values in order to give a clear understanding on how being at the appointed place of duty can affect not only yourself but your battle buddies, leadership, chain of command, and the mission. Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage are the very core of how the Army works. Know that it is your DUTY to keep these above values at heart in mind and part of your everyday life.
