The birth of Jazz and its influence

The American culture only true born art is called Jazz. “Without understanding the history of jazz, it's damn near impossible to appreciate it.” (Soyouwanna) The origin of jazz can be traced back to slaves from West Africa. During their break time, the slaves would make music that would remind them of their homes.

Ragtime and Classic Jazz marked the real origin of Jazz. “Ragtime is in 2-beat meter, which means it goes "boom-chick, boom-chick." It stays on this steady pulse most of the time, but the melody is often dancing around with a lot of syncopation.” (Soyouwanna) Ragtime Jazz also produce music legends like Scott Joplin, a performer and songwriter that went to extraordinary lengths to gain respect for jazz and black musicians. Around the same time, developing and upcoming trumpet players like Louis Armstrong, who used sophisticated chord progression rather than on the melody in his solos, lead to a reduction of improvises rhythm in jazz.
