Sergey Brin and Larry Page are the founders of Google. They met while attending graduate school at Stanford University in 1995. The two began working together on a research project in 1996. That research project later became Google search engine. Google search engine was first known at BackRub. Despite BackRub’s popularity in the university research community they were not able to stir up any interest from any of the internet companies operating at that time. One of those companies turned them away because the CEO felt users did not care about search abilities. I am sure he is kicking himself in the rear end now.

Brin and Page kept working on the project and in September of 1998 they had raised enough capital to open their own company, Google. The name BackRub was replaced by Google because they felt Google was a reference to the massive amount of information in the world. “Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” (“Company-Google”, 2014). Within three months of operation Google was listed as one of the Top 100 Web Sites and Search Engines for 1998 by PC Magazine. “Google generates over 96% of its revenues from advertising and this has remained true for last several years” (“Understanding Google Business Model”, 2012). Google is continuing to pursue other areas to bring in revenue such as, enhancing its search offerings, getting involved in the mobile industry and developing operating systems. These ventures have not produced any major revenues to date however Google is very optimistic that will change over the next few years.
