The title alone got my attention, strong title for a strong article. Rochelle R. Peterson and Erica R. Davila authors of “Are the Walls of Justice Tumbling Down,” and professors at Arcadia University focus was to share their learning experience to future teachers on the multicultural subject, based on their lived experiences; also, to show the connection between theory and practice. Peterson and Davila studied Gorski analyzes the content of forty-five undergraduate and graduate level courses in multiculturalism. Gorski finds that “most multicultural education type courses are not designed to prepare teachers to do work of multicultural education.” Gorski (2008). These findings made me wonder why is that; Peterson and Davila wanted to see what could be done differently to allow teachers to enhance the multicultural courses; so they decided to examine their own classes. Multicultural education should not just be a course taught in college but a class in grade school, it should be a part of the foundation for everyone. Teachers learning about their students back ground and the experiences they have lived through as the students learn about the teachers the same. Just as a counselor has to learn their clients’ background through various research or conversing with them to get their views and experience with certain events in their life. The most significant issue out of this entire article was “Are the walls really tumbling down? Yes they are: brick by brick; student by student; teacher by teacher.” (Peterson & Davila, 2009). With this issue at hand us, as future counselors, facilitators, and the like should make it our duty to be educated in multiculturalism. It allows us to be more open to a lot more clients and students; and lets them know that there is someone that they can talk to.
