Founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Microsoft Corporation has been a leader in the technology industry. The name was created from the word "microcomputer" and "software" to form the term Microsoft. The founders originally developed an interpreter for basic programming language at Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems and would later create MS-DOS. MS-DOS was a joint effort through IBM that eventually transitioned to the PC-DOS. There vision at Microsoft was to create and advance technology to help businesses and individuals realized their full potential. They became public in 1986 under the Nasdaq stock symbol "MSFT." In 1995 they released Windows 95 which was a revolutionary operating system as it integrated MS-DOS and there Microsoft Office applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Since Windows 95, there have been multiple iterations and upgrades to this operating system, included Windows 2000, XP, 7 and 8. In 2001, they released Xbox, which was a revolutionary gaming system, and in 2007 the Xbox 360 was released, followed by the 2013's Xbox One. Microsoft has several divisions that work on different systems (Enterprise, Logistics, Analysts) all over the world. Paul Allen stepped down from the Board of Directors in November 2000 but stayed on as a Senior Strategy Advisor on a contractual basis. Bill Gates stepped down from CEO in January 2000 but remained a chairman to ensure that his vision would remain at the forefront of Microsoft's business.
