For over centuries people have been altering their mind with the use of a plant. This plant is known as Cannabis Sativa. Cannabis Sativa is an annual herbaceous plant in the Cannabis genus. From this plant marijuana is derived. Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems and seeds from this hemp plant. This plant has the ability to alter your mind because it contains a chemical called delta 9 tetrahydrocannibinol, also known as THC. THC is the chemical responsible for the psychological effects of marijuana. Cannabis Sativa has been making its way around the globe. This first documented use of Cannabis Sativa was found in Chinese records in the 28th century B.C.E. It was found in the writings of emperor Shen Nung. He talked about its powers as a medication to treat sicknesses suck rheumatism, gout and malaria. Next it was found it India for recreational usage. The Muslims used it recreationally when the Koran banned the consumption of alcohol. The Muslims were the ones who introduced hashish. The popularity of hashish spread throughout 12th century Persia and North Africa. Marijuana wasn’t introduced to America until later when the Spanish brought it into the New World in 1545. In 1611 it was introduced to Jamestown where it became a major commercial crop alongside of tobacco and was a source of fiber. It wasn’t until the 1920s when marijuana really began to catch on. Some people believe its popularity was due to Prohibition. The recreational use was common in Jazz musicians and people in the show business. Songs pertaining to reefer became all of the rage in the jazz community. Marijuana Clubs started to sprout out in just about every major city. At the time authorities tolerated these establishments because marijuana was not considered illegal. During the 1850s through 1940s, marijuana was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia and was prescribed for various medical conditions.
