How do you explain the presence of higher power to a child? How do you explain the importance of believing in a God, even when no one has ever seen him? In the children’s book named The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, author C. S. Lewis creatively and subtly informs children on the importance of faith. The story is set during World War 2, where four brothers and sisters move to a professor’s home in order to keep them safe from the bombings of London. It is there that they find a magical wardrobe that brings them to a magical land called Narnia. To their surprise, Narnia is undergoing a war of its own, and the four siblings must come together to help save the new found magical kingdom. Throughout the story, they begin to understand the importance of loyalty, patience, forgiveness and faith and how they are essential to saving Narnia. Through the use of characterization, symbolism and setting, C. S. Lewis demonstrates the importance of keeping faith during times of difficulty in a Christian based allegorical fashion.

Throughout the story, C. S. Lewis uses characterization to demonstrate the importance of keeping faith when we are faced with times of difficulty. One of the most important characters in the book is Aslan the Lion. Many readers believe that Aslan is actually a representation of Jesus Christ. Aslan is said to be the only one who can help them break the curse of Narnia. There is even a rhyme to prove this to be true: Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight, At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more, When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death, And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again” (Lewis 79). Some of the creatures including Mr. Beaver and Tumnus have voiced that Aslan has not been around very much even though they have been in great need of him for quite some time now.
