What is the social web? By definition, the social web is “the complex network of human interactions which occur within an organization”. (Palgrave.com; 2012) What does this really mean though? In my own personal terms, the social web is defined more by commonly used social networks and applications like Facebook and iPhones. To be social is to have many relationships with many different people. What is a better way to accomplish this than through the internet? Hence forth the term “social web”. If the internet can be used for things like research and information, why not add in the ability to communicate and be social. This is another definition of the social web for me; the ability to communicate through the internet.

The next question to tackle would be who uses the social web? It would be easy to assume that the only people who use the social web are of younger persuasions. However, anyone who assumes this would be wrong. The fact of the matter is that the social web is easily accessible and can cater to people of all different ages, races, and religious backgrounds. For instance, there are dating websites that cater specifically to the Protestant faith such as “ChristianMingle.com”. Then there are social websites like Facebook, in which case people of young and old can communicate and gather at any time and any place. Then again, there are social sites that are specifically for the LGBT community, which designs their sites specifically to meet the needs and desires of that community. The simple answer to this question is that people of all ages and races use the social web, and frequently!
