Communicating with the Millennials

I decided to send a questionnaire to 4 people from my workplace, 4 from my sister’s workplace,, and 2 to my friends who are both full time college students. I chose to do this because many employers have different cultures and policies, which may affect how one chooses to communicate. Based on the responses I received, I found that there were a wide variety of preferences, even from those who are close in age. A lot of the preferences depend on the person’s personality, age, culture, and their occupations. The ages of the respondents are between 18 years old and 43 years old.

I asked the respondents to circle the sources they regularly use and explain why. I also asked them to explain their points of view on the sources they did not circle. I did not have one source where all respondents agreed. Below is a list of the 6 different communication sources (email, instant messages, text messages, blogs, social media, and online videos), followed by their opinions on why they do not often use that sources.

Email

Only 1 person did not circle email, she is a full time student studying Creative Communications, and works part time serving at the restaurant Tony Roma’s. She stated that she does not use it regularly because she often texts coworkers instead when she needs a shift covered and she often receives unwanted junk emails and chain letters. She mentioned that it is time consuming to log in, read and sort emails.

Instant Messages or Twitter Tweets

7 out of the 10 respondents did not circle Instant Messages or Twitter Tweets. Some mentioned that instant messaging is outdated and would rather text on their cellphone or Google for quick information. 2 out of the 10 were unfamiliar with instant messaging, and 2 out of the 10 specified that they do not have twitter.
