Five Year Career Development

In making career choices, or deciding a course of path towards a career, it is evident that an individual development plan (IDP) is needed to establish goals and objectives, and provides a clear statement in reference to career goals of an employee. The individual development plan contains short and long-term goals, and can be specifically tailored to certain core competencies in current positions, and improve performances in areas identified. The IDP also prepares an individual for increased responsibilities and growth development in a career field (USDA, 2010).

The IDP not only benefits the employee, but the employer as well, it gives the employer a process to manage and schedule an employee’s development. In addition, the employer can also allocate resources towards the training and development, and fulfill the needs or organizational future workforce requirements (USDA, 2010).

Individual development plans involve the relationship between employee and employer, and incorporate the following; educational courses, coaching and mentorship, and work assignments. Educational courses are designed according to the relevancy of the employee’s goal objectives of specific work, work assignments that allow the employee to work on projects and other variety of jobs that will develop essential skills. Coaching and mentoring from the employer is crucial for the continuing growth of the employee, as he or she is progressing through various phases of training (Nobilis, 2009).

In most organizations, employees want to progress in their careers, and having an individual development plan can help them achieve that objective.
