Unconditional Love

In “The Bride Comes to the Yellow Sky”, you see many themes played around with all throughout the story. Throughout this story, though, there is one theme that seems to carry on throughout is entirety; Love. From the beginning to the end, you can tell that Jack and his bride love each other simply because neither one leaves, no matter what difficulty may present itself.

In the beginning, the author informs you that the bride is neither beautiful nor young, yet Jack married her still. She is described as nervous and shy and you can also tell that she is much poorer than he is, but to Jack, she is his bride. He is beaming on the train ride and is hardly aware of the stares from the other passengers at their wedding attire from their wedding earlier that morning, he is just excited about the journey he and his wife are taking across Texas. As they draw nearer to Yellow Sky, though, he begins to worry. Even though he believes he loves this girl, he is nervous because he had left his town and had married without letting anyone know, proving that he had to truly love her to risk marrying her and upsetting the town. You sense his anxiousness the closer and closer they get, and soon the bride begins to feel guilty also, but nonetheless, they stick together and stay persistent.

In the end, the bride ends up even saving Jack’s life. Scratchy Wilson, the last surviving member of a gang of outlaws, wants to kill Jack, Yellow Sky’s sheriff. After learning Jack no longer carries a gun, wanting to be more civilized, and finding out about his new wife, Scratchy comes to the conclusion that he can’t kill Jack. In the end, it seems as if Scratchy can’t comprehend the thought of marriage, or how anyone could really love Jack, but, because the bride truly loves Jack, and he loves her, Scratchy spared his life. So in the end, True Love Won.
