In 1935, Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act because many people were in need of benefits this was due to the Great Depression however, there were no funds to pay these benefits. So the idea was for citizens who were working currently to pay funds into the system and the monies received would be distributed out in the form of social security checks. The citizens working today would pay for the generation retiring citizens so in that happening the system would replinish itself forever inspite of having no funds to start with. So in essence the monies the citizens pay in the system are immediately sent to citizens who are currently receiving Social Security Benefits.

This is how the Social Security was started. The government website Social Security.gov is an example of a government website that provides helpful and precise information for the people and does a good job of promoting Social Security in America.
