Teleworking

Terms of Reference:

Teleworking, or telecommuting, where employees work outside of the traditional office space has become increasingly popular. Today, advances in communication and information technologies have greatly helped to facilitate this kind of arrangement. This business report will examine the question of whether or not telework is becoming increasingly prevalent and is making the concept of a centralized office irrelevant. This information will be valuable to employees to help them understand future working trends and assess how these changes will affect them, from issues such as work-life balance to job satisfaction. Employers will greatly benefit as well since the information will enable them to form strategies to stay competitive and find ways to leverage employee productivity.

Methodology:

To explore this issue, I examined data, statistics and research studies from professional journals and reports. I first gathered findings from scientific research studies to understand the benefits and limitations that have been found about telework. I summarized these findings and organized them into advantages and challenges to present a clear picture of the factors influencing firms’ decisions to adopt telework policies. I then focused on attaining numerical data to understand the current state of telework and to identify future trends. The data that I used were mainly found from government sources, such as Statistics Canada and the U.S. Census Bureau, and are primarily based on the results of census surveys. To find more updated information, I examined reports from organizations that are dedicated to promoting telework or have the resources to analyze a global range of telework-related data. These organizations include the Telework Research Network and Premiere Global Services.
