Executive Summary

Tai Ping Qing Jiao (太平清醮) is a traditional culture event which host in Cheung Chua. Tai Ping Qing Jiao, or called The Bun Festival which included two main parts: the bun scrambling and PiuSik parade. Since the bun tower accident happened in1978, the Hong Kong Government has ordered to cancel the "Bun Scrambling". The Hong Kong Government wanted to reorganize and promote the whole event, included the bun scrambling and PiuSik parade. Hong Kong Government wanted to package them as a tourism project. This study is aimed to identify the cultural development of the Tai Ping Qing Jiao and specify suggestions to the government about the policy that could keep the original tradition of the event.

1. Introduction

The Bun Festival is a part of the Tai Ping Qing Jiao which means "the purest sacrifice celebrated for great peace." This festival would hold in Cheung Chau on the day of Buddha's birthday every year. The Buddha birthday is the fifteenth day of the fourth month in Chinese Lunar Calendar, which is in May every year. To be more precisely, Cheung Chau Tai Ping Qing Jiao is a festival that the Cheung Chau residents pray for blessing on the following days and years.
