Finance: Integrity Above All

Where there is wealth, there tends to be corruption. Money, in and of itself, is not bad at all. In fact, money is essential to life in the United States and almost everywhere. However, you can look into your own life and notice examples of people around you that have been consumed with the love of money. It can drive people to do incredibly cruel and selfish acts. Weston and I, Noah, are Finance majors. We study money: how it works, why it is good or bad, the most resourceful ways to use it, etc. In this paper, we want to dive into the ethical issue of the love of money in the workplace.

Business has been an integral part of my family my entire life. My father, Seth, started his own marketing firm when he was twenty-two years of age. My brother, Chase, started his own finance company at the age of 25. My sister just started her own coffee shop. My other brother, Denver, just started a bookstore. To say the least, business has been very good to my family. However, through my family working in business I have been able to see what the love of money can do to people inside the work place.

Chase, my oldest brother, began his professional career at Northwestern Mutual Insurance and Financial Services. He did very well in his time there becoming one of the top sellers in the business. However, over time, Chase began to realize that the company was doing some things that were not ethically correct. One example would be when Northwestern needed more money they would transfer customers funds from one account to another, charging the customers a fee for each transfer. This frustrated Chase to the point of leaving the company and starting his own. This is just one example of the love of money taking over the hearts of people in the workplace.
