Parag Khanna: Mapping the future of countries

http://www.ted.com/talks/parag_khanna_maps_the_future_of_countries#t-808002

Today, you will view this Ted Talk on ‘living in a borderless world.’ You must take notes on it as you watch. Make note of any concepts you have learned regarding political geography thus far.

Since giving his talk in 2009, numerous conflicts have emerged rooted in issues tied to borders, political corruption, ethnic identity, and religion. Given Khanna’s views about the future of the global community and the conflicts that are/have occurred in the last 5 years, create one page response that updates Khanna’s arguments (it can be longer). You may choose one element to focus on or highlight the talk as a whole. Please be specific with your response using references to the talk, real world examples of post-2009 events, and other pertinent information to support your argument. This should be written in MLA format and include a formal works consulted page.

A few examples of post-2009 events:

* Arab Spring

* South Sudanese Independence

* Syrian civil war

* ISIL/ISIS

* Annexation of Crimea

* China and claims of territories in disputed waters

We will conduct a formal, graded discussion of this talk and your updated information you have researched. You must be able to cite contextual evidence from both the talk and your update, so you should take notes as you listen to Khanna’s talk. Your handwritten notes will be collected when you drop your paper at the beginning of class. All of these components will make up a major assessment grade.

Your notes, paper and discussion will be due Monday, March 14, by the tardy bell for your class period. No late papers will be accepted. The discussion will take place after that. You will drop your paper in the Schoology assignment page.
