Diabetes

Diabetes, Type 1 & Type 2, is a disease that affects how the body uses glucose; a sugar which is your body's main source of energy. When you eat, glucose from the food makes its way into your bloodstream. Your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin, which helps the glucose get into the body's cells. However, if someone has Diabetes, the body either can't create insulin or the insulin doesn't work in the body like it’s supposed to. The blood sugar level gets too high if the glucose is unable to get into the body’s cells, making people very sick if they don't get treatment.

Type 1 Diabetes, is also known as Insulin-Dependent Diabetes or Juvenile Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a common chronic disease in children and adolescents, and its incidence is approximately two-thirds of all diabetes cases diagnosed in children (Haller, Atkinson, & Schatz, 2005; Karvonen et al., 2000). Type 1 Diabetes is when the pancreas can't produce insulin. Your body can still get glucose from food, but the glucose can't get into the cells where it's needed, and stays in the blood, which makes the blood sugar level very high and in turn, causes health problems.

The symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes include: frequent bathroom breaks, in an attempt to get rid of the extra blood sugar by passing it out of the body in the urine, drinking and eating a lot more, losing weight, and feeling exhausted.
