Example of Business Negotiating skills

I was working with company at client site as Test Engineer. My responsibilities include end to end manual testing & developing scripts for automation testing for the client’s iOS app. This app is basically a mutual fund app, where the clients can login and look at the details of the funds they possess. The testing starts with unit testing of different modules such as User Interface, module functionality & integration testing. The sequence of events listed below, wherein I had to negotiate with the developer about getting a defect fixed and how the matter was escalated to Project Manager Level.

• During unit testing of the funds module, I found the results of fund search component not populating the required funds at several occasions. This issue was occurring intermittently and hence required to raise a Defect as it will affect the end customer.

• Accordingly, I raised a Test Defect in JIRA [tool which is used to log defects, track the resolution and used for reporting purposes]. This defect was assigned it to a developer, who has worked on the module and responsible for fixing any issues related to the same.

• During stand-up meeting the very next day, where we discuss the defects raised, the plan of action to fix the same and any roadblocks encountered with the Project Manager and all the team members. The defect was discussed accordingly and the project manager advised the developer to check and resolve the same.

• After several hours, I got an automatic mail stating that the defect is assigned back to me & with a reason described as “The issue is not occurring, hence close the defect as invalid”, as comments from the developer in the JIRA tool.

• As standard procedure, I requested for the latest build from the developer and retested the issue. The issue re-occurred around 5-6 times out of 10 attempts.
