Organ Donation

Upon receiving a new drivers license in the United States, there is a section in the paper work, which asks if the licensed driver would like to become an organ donor. Most individuals skim past this option as there is little information regarding the positive aspects of organ donation presented to the new driver. Today in the United States, there are thousands of people waiting for organ donations and unfortunately there is a shortage on donated organs. This results in countless individuals dying every year waiting on that list. If people took the time to become educated on the positive ramifications of becoming an organ donor, more individuals would be inclined to become organ donors. The number of people dying while waiting for their life saving organ would decrease significantly. Fortunately, doctors and other professionals have collaborated information and ideas on how to dissolve this problem. Some of these ides including: pushing putting all people on the list, having to be an organ donor to receive an organ, financial incentives, and researched educational programs.

Every year the shortage of human organs grows worse. Between 1990 and 2009, for example, the waiting list for and organ transplant increased four-folding rising from 20,000 to just over 100,000 (Tabarrok, 2009). Since there is such high numbers of people in need, the percentage of deaths have been steadily increasing. Patients that are on the waiting list are in end-stage organ failure and have been evaluated by a transplant physician (UNOS, 2015).
