Chapter 6

A Case Study on Bone Tissue Structure and Repair

1. Define:

1. Hemorrhage is defined as loss of blood from the blood vessels by flow through ruptured walls.

2. Fracture is defined as a break in the bone.

3. Proximal is defined as toward the attached end of the limb or the origin of a structure.

4. Diaphysis is defined as the elongated shaft of a long bone.

2. Mrs. Morgan has three different fractures. The first fracture is of the left humerus at the proximal diaphysis and that bone would be classified as a long bone. The second fracture is of the occipital bone and is classified as a flat bone. The final fracture is the 3rd vertebral body and would be classified as an irregular bone.

3. The cavity of the vertebral body consists of spongy bone and is surrounded by a protective layer of compact bone. According to page 158 of the textbook, “The trabeculae in spongy bone align precisely along the lines of stress and help the bone resist stress as much as possible.” Spongy bone is also filled with red bone marrow which makes it important in producing red blood cells.

4. Compact dense bone makes up the majority of the diaphysis of long bones. The layers of compact bone form the Haversian system. The central canal, concentric lamellae, osteocytes, canaliculi, perforating canals, circumferential lamellae, interstitial lamellae are the different layers located in the Haversian system.

5. The spongy bone of Mrs. Morgan’s compact bone houses blood vessels. The fact that Mrs. Morgan is bleeding shows she damaged some of the spongy bone. This is related because the bone is out of place and bleeding showing a fracture.

6. The fibers required for a fibrocartilaginous are collagen fibers. Capillaries grow within the hematoma, then phagocytic cells invade and cleanup debris, then fibroblast produce collagen fibers that span the break and connect broke bone ends, then chondroblasts secrete...
