Starbucks is a well-known powerful company with an abundance of values. One will gain knowledge on how the company differentiates between the right to protect their interests and the employees’ rights to be free from wrongful intrusions into personal affairs. Additionally, one will learn how technology used in Starbucks affects the employees’ privacy; how employees are monitored, and how they protect employees’ personal information. Suggestions will be made of what internal and external control mechanisms should be in place regarding accounting practices, conflict of interest, executive compensation, and legal and ethical duties for board members.

Starbuck’s Right to Protect Interests & Employees’ Rights To Be Free From Wrongful Intrusions Into Personal Affairs

Starbucks clearly states in their business ethics and compliance documents that they understand employee’s or as they call them “partners” have lives outside the workplace and have to balance life, work, and family. In fact, they encourage being out in the community (“Starbucks”, 2016). However, want to make it clear employees may keep their personal life confidential, but to bear in mind that they are a representation of Starbucks on and off the clock. Everyone has a right to their personal affairs and as long as they do not affect the workplace there should be no issue. Starbucks could add to their policy or have their partners sign an agreement to keep work and personal affairs separate. Philosopher Patricia Werhane states, “An employee has an obligation to respect the goals and property of the employer, the employer has a reciprocal obligation to respect the rights of the employee as well, including the employee’s right to privacy” (Hartman, 2011, Chapter 7).
