Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background
Education is a crucial factor for nations to advance their social, cultural and economic well-being. Gender equality in education is directly proportional to gender equality in the labor force, in the household and in decision-making. Educating female’s lower mother and baby mortality rates generate higher educational attainment and achievement for next generations and improves economic conditions of nations (Schultz, 1993). In spite of this realization female education is a crisis in Africa and world in general.
1.2 Problem Statement
Girl child education is the most important instrument for human resource development in Zambia. Girl child education is becoming a universal human right and an important component of women empowerment in Zambia. However, gender inequality in education is a serious problem in Zambia since independence in 1964. There is still lower enrolment rate for girls and higher dropout rates than their male counterparts in Zambia.
1.3 Research Objectives
General Objective of the Study
The study had the purpose of identifying factors causing gender inequality in education in secondary schools based in Lusaka District.
Specific Objectives of the Study
(i) To examine factors for gender inequality in education in Lusaka District secondary schools.
(ii) To investigate the impacts of gender inequality on education in Lusaka district secondary schools.
(iii) To explore mechanisms to balance gender inequality in Education in Lusaka secondary schools.
1.4 Research Questions
Regarding research objectives, the following research questions were developed to guide the investigation
