Cell Phone Technology

Technological innovations have had massive impacts on the quality of life of the human race. They have greatly influenced the entire lifestyle of humanity. In this respect, humans depend on them for executive functioning and sustenance of their livelihoods. One of the technologies that continue to impact in different ways to the general wellbeing of humans pertains to cellular phones. It cannot be disputed that cellular telephony is amongst the fastest growing technologies across the globe. Currently, the human race is experiencing the third generation of this technology. Although it was initially meant for communication, current phones allow the users to perform more than holding conversations. It is against this background that this paper reviews the cellular phone technology in light of how it works, the technical problems it is designed to resolve, its limitations and its prospects for success in the market place.

The functioning of Cellular Phones

In his consultative review, Klemens (2010) indicates that the functioning of the modern cellular phones is informed by the cellular concept. In this, there are various lower-power base stations which seek to service the mobile users in their respective coverage areas as well as handoff users located in neighbouring base stations. This is made possible while all of them are on the move. In this regard, one base station does not cover an entire city or location, rather, the city is broken up into several cells that are also referred to as coverage areas (Cotton, Anderson & Tufekci, 2009). The smaller coverage areas are then furnished with an individual lower base station. Thus the user phones in a single cell are able to communicate effectively with the base station found in that particular cell.

When the user switches the cellular phone on, it automatically connects to the base station the user is nearer to. Although the phone...
